Congratulations Discovery Preschool Class of 2017
Discoveries celebrated Halloween fun with students and families on Friday Oct.21st. There were treats and games to enjoy. Sandwiches, salads and chips were part of the party. Of course there were cookies, cupcakes and candy too.
Miss Jessica in the Alligator class was busy helping people decorate monster faces on flannel board. The Monkey’s class was crazy with ping pong balls flying everywhere. There was a black cup Pong game. Miss Brittney moves fast and kept the balls in play. Her helper was Miss Heather and they made a great team for Pong.
Panda’s class had a Circus Ring Toss and a Hammer whacking Thing. Miss Jackie was the clown and Miss Daniela dressed as a Bat joined in the fun. Pumpkin bowling was the entertainment in the Cubs classroom. Miss Frankie and Miss Rose passed out more candy.
The Mustang class was happening…Music was playing as friends and families went fishing for Goodie Bags with Miss Ashlee. Mr. Garret was teasing everyone with Bite the Ghost Game. It was hard to bite a powdered sugar doughnut without your hands. Dancing and playing “Toss the Spider Game” at the big black spider web was Miss Dawn. She was dressed as a Kitty Cat with a light up tail.
The Babies Caterpillar room had a “Decorate a cookie” there was frosting everywhere. Sugar high was a guarantee. Miss Gina and Mr. Rob were directing the front room with the snacks and. Miss Silvia was doing her usual rounds dress as Thing 2. Miss Brittney was Thing 1. Or was it the other way around??
Everyone seemed to have a marvelous time and it was great practice for Halloween. There were witches, super heros, princesses and zombies everywhere. It is a wonderful time to be able to pretend to be someone different than ourselves.
Smokey the Bear made a visit to Discoveries to tell us about being safe. He brought his cool fire truck and all his great friends that fight forest fires. We got to climb into their fire truck.
The brave Crew from Nevada Division of Forestry told us about being safe at home and in the forest. They explained what tools they use and how they use them. They work hard to put out forest fires to save animals and people. It is very different from our local firefighters that put out house and building fires. The forestry crew has to carry water pumps on their backs because there are no fire hydrants in the forest. They use shovels, chain saws and picks to dig in the ground to stop the fires. Sometimes they light fires too. This is to burn toward the fire and stop it. This is called a back burn. Trees and plants burn very fast in Nevada because there is not a lot of rain.
The crew gave everyone a special bag with stickers and a comic book about Smokey the bear. Some of the children were afraid of Smokey because he was so big. Others went to him and gave him a hug. Smokey has been helping the forestry department for many years.
We love to have special visitors at Discoveries. Smokey the Bear was the best.
Summer has been very busy. Graduation, new summer session and field trips have kept us going and going.
At the end of the school year, we had 31 students graduate on to kindergarten from the Monkeys, Alligators and Mustang classes. We had a full house with almost 200 families and friends cheering us on. The entertainment and slide show were a hit.
Some of the other children moved into new classrooms. The Cubs class is excited about outside playtime. A new playground is in process as dirt and patchy grass are being replaced and artificial turf is being installed. A new sand box is ready for fun. This will be great for summer and winter play.
We said good bye to some for the summer and hello to others. Miss Jessica is on a long summer vacation and Miss Elle is here to continue the fun and learning. Miss Jackie has a long vacation too but will return to play with the Pandas. We have approximately 60 boys and girls in our summer program. Not all are here at the same time; many are on vacations at various times.
Miss Kellie and Miss Gloria painted the nursery a beautiful lavender color. Come see the changes in our baby’s room.
We welcome ice cream days on Wednesday when our favorite Popsicle truck comes for a weekly visit to cool us down on hot days. Otter pops keep us all cool on the inside.
Bike day has turned out to be a success as always. The school vans are parked at the entrance and exits for a few hours to allow the younger children a chance to bring their bikes, tricycles, scooters and other means of transportation.
On Friday the Mustangs bring their bikes, scooters and other things to ride across the street to the Gator Swamp Park. Of course they all have their helmets on to ensure safety and fun for all. We take the parachute, sidewalk chalk and bubbles for extra fun.
The wind makes a great way to use bubbles and fills the parachute for a silly time. Sometimes the sprinklers are on and we just can’t help getting wet. Lunch under the cover of the patio is a great way to enjoy lunch.
Face painting and water play days continue the fun for all. We will have a Magic Show at Discoveries on Monday July 11th for all to enjoy. There will be a short show for younger children. The Mustangs will be treated to a longer show and maybe learn a few tricks.
Overall everyone is having a great time. We try to offer something for everyone. Many parents remark that they wish they could come play with us for just one day. It might be more fun than a day at work. Summer is a marvelous time when you are a kid.
August will be here before we realize and then back to school.
